Proposal for a Revised Golden League (GL) System
Dear Federation Members,
In response to the call for enhancing the competitive integrity and excitement of our beloved Golden League, I present a fresh, two-tier system proposal. Our aim is to cultivate an environment where every match matters, and both our top-flight and rising teams feel the thrill of competition.
NB: All matches will be as now, friendlies (or cup and domestic) and it doesn't matter which tier below your team is in. Also, KO rounds will not begin until week 14 of season 2, so the cup should have less impact.
1. Introduction:
I propose two primary tiers: the GL Masters (top tier) and the Challenger Tier. In addition, the idea of introducing the Underdog Cup to give a spotlight moment for our emerging teams.
2. GL Masters (Top Tier):
a. League Stage:
- Lasting an entire Hattrick season (16 weeks) plus an additional 13 weeks into the subsequent season.
- Comprising our top 20 teams, selected based on various established metrics.
- Teams will engage in either a single or double round-robin format.
b. Knock-out Stage:
- At the end of the league stage, the top 7 teams, along with a Wildcard entry from the Challenger Tier, advance.
- Quarter-finals in week 14 on neutral ground under cup rules.
- Semi-finals during the double-friendly week (week 15).
- The third-place playoff and grand final in week 16.
3. Challenger Tier (Secondary Tier):
a. League Stage:
- Parallel to the GL Masters, catering to the teams below the top cut.
- The top performer at the end of the league stage clinches the Wildcard spot in the GL Masters KO stage.
b. Promotion Aspect:
- Top 3 teams (including the Wildcard winner) earn promotion to the GL Masters for the next season.
4. Underdog Cup:
- After the Challenger Tier league concludes, teams ranked 2nd to 9th participate.
- The format mirrors that of the GL Masters' knockout stage: Quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final held in weeks 14, 15, and 16 respectively.
5. Relegation Mechanism:
- The three teams finishing at the bottom of the GL Masters league are relegated to the Challenger Tier for the upcoming season.
6. Tiebreakers:
Potential tied outcomes in the KO rounds will lean on goal difference, total goals scored, and if necessary, a decisive tiebreaker match on neutral grounds.
---
My conviction is that this proposed structure will weave a thrilling narrative throughout the season and inspire teams of all ranks. I eagerly await your feedback, insights, and potential support.
Warm regards,
LA-Lord_Bebbington NB: HTUM Fed members can vote on either of the 2 proposed format changes in the GL XIX thread in our Federation forum.
